El Hong Kong Film Archive, un recinto que se dedica tanto al almacenaje de películas de cine, cómo a su exhibición y promoción para todos los públicos ha hecho un gran trabajo para promocionar la cultura del país y ha elegido las 100 películas imprescindibles de entre un total de miles de obras para hacer un programa de difusión de estas películas.
Por lo que podemos ver, y analizando un poco la parte que nos corresponde de cine extremo, hemos visto que sobretodo son películas de wuxia durante bastante tiempo con directores cómo Tsui Hark, complementadas por cine de artes marciales con la aparición de Bruce Lee y más tarde Jackie Chan y intensos thrillers de John Woo y Johnnie To más tarde para adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos.
